Summary/Abstract: The present paper brings into discussion the difficulties of teachers in addressing the issue of competence formation in an age of a multitude of co-existing communication modes and operational frameworks, which, due to the present day educational needs, are not only constantly changing, but also become more field specific. However, the major educational trends attach increasing importance to interdisciplinarity, which points to the need of designing a new communicative competence framework, one that may include new dimensions, such as multi-modal communication literacy. In order to better understand the difficulties digital natives may have in decoding a new form of communication, the language of “emoji”, a qualitative pilot study was conducted using a small convenience sample of participants. The present research underlies aspects linked to several competence frames – communicative, multi-modal and emoji competence in an effort to redefine the set of sub-competences needed to be an effective communicator in the 21st century.
