Summary/Abstract: The article approaches pragmatic issues of the complex predicate with modal operator and verbal semantic support within the Romanian and Spanish televisual-political discourse, more precisely the role of modal operators within a strategy specific to negative politeness: the indirect expression of the illocutionary force by formulating the requests in modalized utterances. It is emphasized that, through modal operators, the locutor decreases the cost and increases the benefit for the interlocutor (the tact maxim of the politeness principle) ensuring verbal cooperation during the conversation.
