Summary/Abstract: Surrealism is best known for the powerful visual imagery presented in art in the 20th century. This cultural movement was also envisioned within literary creations and its core feature describes the flow of the unconscious ideas that would reveal the true essence of man. The novel written by Boris Vian, Mood Indigo is an example of such surreal space of thought. Striking is the revealing of a world dominated by material/mundane things which diminishes almost completely the spiritual. This paper follows the substratum of the text and analyzes how vital concepts such as “love”, “marriage”, “family” are distorted and apparently harming for the human. How and why are they harming? The analysis offers some answers to these questions and challenges the reader to understand how one can discover his/her true essence through such reading experiences as this novel.
