Summary/Abstract: Nation states in the 21st century face new challenges brought by the modern world. The authors explore how the clash between globalist and sovereigntist elites affects the functioning of nation states. The presumption is that the nation state is still the central institutional framework which enables both solving the crucial problems of a community and the political engagement of its members. In this regard, the authors consider that both the disregard for local specifics, which is characteristic of globalists, and the closing within their own borders, which is characteristic of nationalists, are problematic from the perspective of contemporary social challenges. In order for the elite to perform its function, the ability to think and act globally as well as rootedness in the national cultural framework are needed.
