Summary/Abstract: Continuing its systematic transition to a sustainable, climate-neutral, and circular economy under the European Green Deal, the EU has announced that it aims to make consumption more sustainable and enable consumers to take an active role in the green transition, henceforth initiated various initiatives in that regard. ‘Initiative on Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition’ has been part of several related initiatives launched by the European Commission. This study aims to examine the latest EU policies to empower the consumers and to analyse the scope of the directive proposal tabled by the European Commission on 30 March 2022. Based on the literature review, the study examines the latest EU policies and through the "What kind of sustainable consumption?" question, discusses the potential of this change in terms of sustainable consumption. It is argued that the measures will foster the purchase of green products. However, if cultivated with actions that will reduce consumption rates by supporting ‘sufficiency’ and attitude changes, these efforts will be more effective in terms of sustainable consumption. The developments in the EU within the scope of the European Green Deal will have a transformative effect on Turkey, and in this context, it is important to closely follow the developments in this area.
