Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to reveal the importance of the conference themed unity, which was held in the Vatican in 1894, in terms of Eastern and Western Churches, with different dimensions. This process, which started with Pope Leo's invitation letter in June 1894, had a great impact both in the Western public opinion and in the Ottoman Empire. The fact that the religious leaders who will attend the meeting were members of the Eastern Catholics living in the Ottoman lands caused the Ottoman Government to pay attention to the issue. In the Ottoman Archive Documents, the conference agenda was handled with the titles of “The Issue of the Eastern Churches” and “Unification of the Eastern and Roman Churches,” while it was the subject of the agenda with the titles of “The Union of Churches,” “Pope and the Eastern Churches” in the Western newspapers of the period. Each group looked at the conference and its aims within the framework of their own view and took a position accordingly. This study, which was prepared in the light of Ottoman Archive Documents and newspapers of the period, was discussed together with the conference that took place in the Vatican in November 1894.
