Examination of Conspicuous Consumption in the Context of Artworks: An Empirical Study

Summary/Abstract: Purpose – In this study, a literature study on "the relationship between conspicuous consumption and works of art" has been conducted, and the historical development of conspicuous consumption and the place of art in conspicuous consumption have been examined, and it has been aimed to examine works of art in the context of conspicuous consumption. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, the survey method was used to obtain data. The population of the research consists of individuals residing in Istanbul, Eskişehir, İzmir, Bursa and Samsun, and visiting art exhibitions over the age of 18. The sample of the research consists of 265 individuals reached by simple random sampling method during the exhibition in different art exhibition venues. “Personal Traits Inventory” and “Conspicuous Consumption Scale” were used as data collection tools. The obtained data were entered into the SPSS 22 program, statistical tests were performed, and analyzed and interpreted. Normality test was performed on the statistical data and the data were interpreted according to the results. Results – According to the findings, it was determined that individuals tend to consume conspicuous while meeting their needs, and it was seen that there was no significant difference in terms of age, gender and income in conspicuous consumption. Discussion – The findings of this study, in which works of art are examined in the context of conspicuous consumption, overlap with Veblen's (2007) argument that people from all classes and walks of life can exhibit conspicuous consumption.
