Summary/Abstract: The representatives of the law enforcement bodies from all states are constantly looking for sources of information, relevant for solving a wide spectrum of problems, arising in the process of investigation of criminal acts. In the category of information sources, we can also find those made available to the law enforcement bodies by the confidential collaborators and by the informers. In the process of gathering the necessary information in criminal cases, the use of confidential collaborators and informers is an effective method of obtaining a wide spectrum of important information for the process of investigation of the socially dangerous facts. However, the representatives of the law enforcement bodies place a special emphasis on the use of the massive information made available by the confidential collaborators in order to prevent, investigate and combat, in particular, organized crime. At the same time, the issues related to the forces and means used by the intelligence services and by the bodies that carry out the special investigation activity are regulated, practically in all states, by normative acts of a secret nature. In these conditions, the activity of confidential collaborators and informers is not only interesting, but also valuable and complex, having an enormous theoretical, scientific and practical importance in the fight against criminal acts, this is why they must benefit from appropriate legal protection from the state.
