Summary/Abstract: The British decided to open a vice consulate in Batumi, as well as important administrative and commercial centers such as Trabzon, Erzurum, Kayseri and Samsun, within the consulate network which they started to establish in Anatolia since the 1830s. During this expansion of the consular network, the British government appointed Frederick Guarracino, a Maltese Levantine merchant, as vice-consul, and Guarracino came to Batumi in April 1840 and started his duty. The main expectation of the British government from the Batumi vice-consul, which was established with the authority to trade, was the protection and expansion of British commercial interests in the region. Therefore, the most important goal of Guarracino in Batumi during his six-year residence in Batumi was to obtain opportunities to develop British trade in the region. An important part of his mission was primarily to improve the commercial conditions in Batumi. On the other hand, within the scope of this duty, there were also travels to determine the commercial resources of the region. For this purpose, Guarracino made two trips, one to Artvin and the other to Erzurum, in 1841, in accordance with the instructions of his superior in Erzurum, James Brant. He tried to determine the market opportunities for British products as well as determining the transportation possibilities on the routes he passed during these travels.
