Summary/Abstract: The article outlines the external conditions for systemic change in the USSR: the ideological weakness of the system; the dysfunctionality based on divergences resulting from the historical experience of Central and Eastern European countries; the inefficiency of socialist economies, weakening the potential of the USSR; a number of events in the international space setting the tone and character of future transformational changes. These factors had to not only exist, but also create a certain configuration of events, where each piece of the puzzle had its causes and consequences. As a result of this process, there were the subsequent transformational changes that led to the emergence of the Russian Federation as the heir to the USSR with all its implications.
