Summary/Abstract: A pedagogue is a person who has frequent and close contact with his pupils, which allows him to observe them in various situations: while playing, talking, being physically active, eating meals, and – in case of younger children – even while sleeping. This allows teachers to notice various types of developmental disorders, including speech impairments. For that reason they need to demonstrate a basic knowledge of speech development, which could facilitate an early implementation of speech therapy. The development of speech is influenced by proper breathing, biting and chewing, so the observations of the teacher may be helpful. In the research presented in the article, I tested the level of understanding of speech development among pedagogues and checked their willingness to cooperate with speech therapists. The key to providing early comprehensive help to children lies in interdisciplinary cooperation and mutual exchange of experiences between professionals.
