Summary/Abstract: Finland is presently considered the promised land for alternative cartoon art. Despite noticeable differences in style and subject matters of the works described in the article, the common ground is the considerable distance to the mainstream and focus on promoting the highest artistic value. Going back to the 70ties, the punk movement and DIY attitude, where the author looks for the roots of Finnish cartoon, Lietzen shows the changes that Finnish strips have gone through from black-and-white zins to cartoon blogs, presents cult publishers and lists the leading visionary Finnish cartoon artists.
