Summary/Abstract: The main interest of this paper is focused on feminine writings, especially on Gabriela Adameșteanu’s writings, in an oppressive era and also on the new terms of a recently acquired freedom. I tried to bring the feminine perspective to the fore on the communist period and post communism. The main question is: What is selected and recorded in the transcription of the feminine gaze? The journey's destination is also a part of the thematic selection. The corpus of texts includes memorial writings from exile or travel journals to North America or France. The main interest of this analysis is self-portraiture, from a feminine perspective and concerning the oppressive system and the „new world” (the West and also the world of freedom after 1990). What is pursued in the development of the destinies analyzed in the paper is how the female writers perceive and transcribe the pulse of life in Romania during communism concerning freedom (of opinion, of speech, the right to life, cultural openness) of the West. This perspective is both internal (from the country) and external (female traveler who returns to the country or has the status of a political exile). In the autobiographical writings (journals, memories, correspondence), I analyze the voices that record the daily life in the communist period and the period that followed. The difference between „before” and „after” the Revolution is centered around freedom.
