Summary/Abstract: This essay aims to analyze the correspondence between Paul Celan and Ingeborg Bachmann and to highlight the discourse of love articulated therein. Their letters allow a better understanding of their biography, work and way of thinking. The correspondence, collected in the volume Herzzeit (2008), documents their turbulent relationship and sheds light on the complex connections between their poetry and personal histories. From the first time they met in Vienna until Celan’s death in 1970, they exchanged letters that are not only poetic texts in their own rights, but also to be read in the context of their poetic work as whole. Writing being very important in the lives of both authors, the struggle with language becomes a central element of their correspondence as well.
