Summary/Abstract: The paper on the Slovak documentary film was first published and presented in Polish Krakow in 1999, at an international conference on the documentary film in Central and Eastern Europe. It has been supplemented and revised in the Slovak lan¬guage. The author focuses on the political turnaround in 1989, which allowed for a final comeback of numerous vital Slovak titles and authors banned by the censorship after the intervention in Czechoslovakia in 1968. Among the most notable documentaries of the ,,black series" were the works by the authors Ladislav Kudelka, Stefan Kamenicky, Vladimir Kubenko, and also the works by Martin Slivka, Pavel Sykora, Dusan Trancik and the creation of Dusan Hanak, which was criticised for its aesthetics of ,,ugliness", especially the documentary Obrazy stareho sveta (The Pictures of the Old World). The creation under free and democratic conditions of the 1990s was affected by economic rather than ideological barriers and by the fact that the government-funded cinemato¬graphy came to an end. Some classics of the 1960s continued to pursue their creative efforts fortified with a new energy, and some talented young and middle-age genera¬tion representatives made their first appearance and though in a rather unsystematic way, they produced works which could not be overlooked: Eubomir Stecko, Juraj Lihosit, Dezo Ursiny, Tomas Pasteka, Samo Ivaska, Jan Fajnor, Fedor Bartko, Kvetoslav Hecko, Miso Suchy, Juraj Kerekes, Pavol Barabas, Mario Homolka; abroad Juraj (Geor¬ge) Torok, and, above all, Fero Fenic (Febiofilm) by his prolific production activity.
