The Fate of a Legacy. The "Nationalization" of Lajos Kelemen's Collection

Summary/Abstract: After the death of the legendary historian Lajos Kelemen which occurred 1963, his valuable posthumous papers and historical remains were hand over to Unitarian Bishopric Archive at Cluj/Kolozsvár, supposedly to administer it. Shortly after that Rumanian Secret police the infamous Securitate had been informed about and the Securitate had forced the leaders of the Church to transfer Kelemen’s bequest to the State Archives of Cluj County. In our study we tried to present the network and methods how the Securitate offi cers gathered enough information on the confi dential subject of Kelemen’s legacy to proceed for its confi scation. Presenting for the fi rst time the approximately inventories of the legacy, there is a hope for identifying at least some part of it. The story related concerning the Christian burial of Lajos Kelemen could contain also some new elements which might help the reader understanding what happened inside and outside the church, and who were those clericals whose “duty” was to regularly furnish and transmit information for the Securitate.
