The Problem of Library and of the Archives in Oradea/Nagyvárad in the Mirror of Pressures and Failings. A Lamentable Chronicle of Oradea (1944-1987)

Summary/Abstract: The study examines the lenghty process library holdings and archives files once in the ownership of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oradea/Nagyvárad fell into the possession of different state institutions during the Communistperiod. The persons playing a part in and responsible for these actions of nationalisation and volunteer offerings of these cultural goods should be found as much among the structures of the repressive regime as in the lines of the so-called “peace priests.” These opportunist cooperations between the clerics and the regime were expressely illegal from the point of view of clerical laws and were profoundly opposed and disagreed by the Diocese of Alba Iulia/Gyulafehérvár – marked by the fi gure of Bishop Áron Márton – which expressed its resistance and disagreement all throughout.
