Summary/Abstract: In this article an attempt is made at evaluating the chronological layering of the German loanwords attested in the newspaper Naujasis Tilžės keleivis, whose period of publication spans the last decades of the existence ofthe Prussian-Lithuanian linguistic community. An overview is given of the typological properties (structure, chronological distribution) ofthis groupofloanwords. The basic German language varieties serving, to various extents, as sources ofGerman loanwords in the Lithuanian language of East Prussia are discussed: these are the Lower German dialects ofEast Prussia and the standard language that grew out ofthe written language
