Summary/Abstract: In the text there will be presented various conditions that may influence experiencing, interpretation and reactions to pain among members of diverse cultures and social groups. Its aim is to present the subject of pain from the perspective of social sciences. It is not limited by some traditional aspects of illness such as disability, influence of chronic pain on social relations and constructing new, post-illness identities. It also presents strategies of pain management in dance and sport, as well as in masochist practice. Conclusions concentrate on negotiability of pain experience, its medicalization, influence of socialization on interpretations and coping with pain in diverse social groups. The article has a theoretical character, it is based mainly on analysis of literature on sociological, psychological and anthropological aspects of pain. In the text there may be also found excerptions from a qualitative research conducted by the Author in different social worlds e.g. of dance and phisical therapy. The text represents interests of sociology of the body and sociology of medicine.
