Summary/Abstract: Methodological and cultural-political changes in Poland as well as equalization of romanticism and other periods in the history of literature allow the author to put Cyprian Norwid’s biography into perspective and place him beyond romanticism, which he used to be associated with by researchers. Pointing to the fact that the major Norwid’s work appeared in the years 1857–1883 and bearing in mind the idea that what makes the artist’s identity is avant-gardism and pre-modernism, the author considers Norwid the greatest polish poet of the second half of the 19th century.
