Summary/Abstract: The Czech cultural underground had its “forefather” in the “big beat” band Hells Devils, whose appearance, style of performance and, above all, American rock’n’roll production, provoked a sharp reaction from the regime, which resulted in their being banned whilst also facing criminal prosecution. This text by František Stárek, who is himself one of the legends of the Czech underground, charts the emergence of the group in the fi rst half of the 1960s. It presents the individual protagonists, the growth in their popularity, individual concerts as well as those who succeeded and emulated them. It also illustrates the evolution of the attitude of the communist regime towards unoffi cial culture, which led to a centralised repressive approach to “long-haired people” in 1966, by which time Hells Devils had already broken up.
