Summary/Abstract: The study tries to present the Hungarians' efforts to find their place in Europe in the 19th - 20th centuries. This challenge was not an easy one for Hungary because the country belonged to an empire - the Habsburg Monarchy - until 1918 and was part of the soviet system after 1945 which meant that the country was not independent. In spite of this, it is possible to observe the hungarian efforts to start the modernization of the country in the first part of the 19th century, to become independent in 1848 - 1849 and to make a foreign policy in the interwar period. The study presents Hungary mostly during the 19th century.
