Summary/Abstract: The article describes a corpus study of the metaphors used in the representation of the bankruptcy and privatization of the Italian airline Alitalia in a number of Italian, British and US American newspapers between August 2008 and January 2009. Firstly, we provide some background to the bailout and privatization of Alitalia and the way it was represented in the media; secondly, we expound our methodology for locating metaphors in corpora; finally, we illustrate some metaphorical expressions and collocations that may reveal hidden ideologies. The results show that the nature and frequency of metaphors is similar across the corpora, but there is significant difference in the range of lexical items that instantiate them.
