Summary/Abstract: György Spiró’s novel Fogság (Captivity) is a classic historical novel on the 1st century A.D. The story starts in Rome, and takes us to Jerusalem, Judea, Alexandria and back to Rome. It is a genuine Bildungsroman with a fictitious person as its key character, with an unattractive stature and temperament, who twice meets Jesus, founder of Christianity and son of God. For Spiró, however, the subject matter is neither religion nor belief, much rather society as it existed two thousand years ago where he recognizes phenomena and concepts of the modern world indicating that great periods in history are coming and going and repeating themselves.
