Summary/Abstract: The historical novel is a genre connected with such names as Patrick Süskind, Christoph Ransmayr or Robert Schneider, i. e., the “classical authors” of literary postmodernism. The article maps aspects of research and thinking about the historical novel, sketches the contours of its development as a genre in German-speaking countries and finally focuses on particular manifestations of the historical novel, specific poetic concepts, represented by the Austrian authors Robert Menasse, Christoph Ransmayr, Robert Schneider, Peter Henisch and Josef Haslinger.
