Summary/Abstract: The combination of “historical” and “invented” characters can be traced back to French works written in the second half of the 17th century organized according to structural principles that proved to be the dominant features of the subgenre known as the historical novel. Most of these novels can be viewed as rewritings of works of historiography from a later perspective. In contrast to a widely held belief, narrative fiction usually regarded as postmodern does not represent a reaction against earlier historical novels. Continuity is apparent in so far as the past is presented as the product of the imagination. The opposition of fact and fiction is as invalid in the best historical novels of the past as in works written in recent decades.
