Naming Man and the World

Summary/Abstract: Out of all living creatures, naming is generally the privilege of man and the Qur'an speaks about that. Naming is an act that starts the very complex process of personalisation, of creating an individual. However, naming a human being is also a restriction, since the selection of a name identifies the person who carries it in different aspects of their social realisation and establishment: in the family, in the community identified as a national entity, establishment within the boundaries of religious or cultural identity. In considering this dual action of the process of giving proper names (in the process of developing the personality of the holder and the development of a wider identity), this paper focuses in particular on the process of giving proper names among Muslim Bosniacs.
