Summary/Abstract: The article sets out to debate the ongoing subject of the open / closed text theory in the context of a short story written by James Joyce (Eveline). Setting the frame by revisiting different theoretical debates of some of the outstanding theoreticians of the 20th century (Derrida, Kristeva, Eco, Barthes etc.) in the field of linguistics and literature, the author analyses Joyce’s text in order t prove her thesis: the reader is never free to interpret the text as a sign he perceives, but manipulated, seduced, led towards a definite meaning.
