Summary/Abstract: One of the fundamental attributes of a nation is its vernacular. Czech is typically understood as an amalgam of structural linguistic varieties (Standard Czech, Common Czech, dialects, interdialects), special types of communication (slang, argot), and common types of speech (ordinary speech, urban speech). Although the author agrees with this, he believes the way Czech is conceived must be broadened to recognize international varieties of Czech (American Czech, Viennese Czech, and many others) as non-standard dialects. It is estimated that there are two million speakers of Czech living outside of the Czech Republic. Building upon interlanguage theory, it is also worth considering the Czech of non-natives, since approximately 750,000 non-native speakers of Czech live in the Czech Republic, showing that Czech does not function only as a first language.
