Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the problem of so-called widespread idioms in Europe, that is, units that exist in several geographically and genetically distant languages and have the same or similar form and figurative basis. Examples of such units are: grabbing the opportunity, reading between the lines, in black and white, to tilt at windmills, the black sheep. After a brief presentation of the theoretical foundations of Eurolinguistics, their research problems in the field of idioms, methods in the identification of idioms spread throughout Europe, research results and some open problems according to the works of mainly German and Russian authors are examined.
