Summary/Abstract: The presented article is centered around the place and role of the symbol of the griffin in the an- cient Mediterranean. It highlights the most important aspects of the origin and development of the griffin symbol for particular purposes of different civilizations, in regard to culture, rites, as well as ideology. Furthermore, the text follows the pattern of reception of the griffin symbol from pagan antiquity to the realm of Christianity.
