Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the direct and indirect influence of pre-academic and academic criticism on the formation of public opinion in evaluating historical works and the demand for a particular image of the national past in the nineteenth century. The author argues in favour of the supposition that a vital role in transmitting information about historical works pro- duced under the Partitions and in exile was played by the daily and periodical press. It was only with the professionalisation of historical research that criticism moved to specialised periodicals, thus narrowing the discussion on historiography’s shape to the specialists’ milieu.
