Summary/Abstract: The importance of international watercourses follows from their multiple roles they play for interested countries (two or more of them), because there are numerous ways in which water from watercourses utilized: as drinking water, for use in households, for navigation, as a resource for generation of electrical power, in industry, in agriculture, etc. International watercourses limit national sovereignty in such a way that all interested countries are obliged to respect the right of other riparian countries on unimpeded utilization of water from a joint watercourse. Therefore the main purpose of this paper is to show fundamental principles of management and protection of international watercourses. The paper is trying to show how much has been achieved so far, both on regional level and wider, regarding codification of rules in the area of watercourses protection. This will be done through brief presentations of some of important international legal instruments governing reasonable and sustainable use and protection of watercourses for which two or more countries are interested
