Summary/Abstract: One of the most successful literary works of Mihail Sebastian, is represented by his Diary, kept between 1935 and 1944, capturing the dark years of antisemitic ascension in Europe, including Romania. What makes this literary creation so special, is beside the quality of his writing, the multilayer structure that his intimate notations record: Mihail Sebastian`s sensibilities for music, nature and love, his creation approach, and the struggle in the process of writing, the asphyxiating atmosphere of antisemitism, his relations with some of the most important cultural figures of the time. The tragedy of Sebastian`s Diary lies in the discrepancy between a young talented man, filled with the joy of living, and the unbreathable air of antisemitism that was rising, infiltrated in all spheres, including the cultural one.
