Cultural Heritage as a Tourist Attraction – Participation of the University Library “Svetozar Markovićˮ in the Adrinetbook Project

Summary/Abstract: All nations build material and immaterial legacies that represent their cultural heritage, which is significant as the foundation of their identity, history, and culture. Cultural heritage objects attract tourists and motivate tourism organizations to invest in the development of cultural tourism. Regional connectivity and joint action in the field of cultural heritage protection are achieved also through European projects related to improving the tourism offer in a region. The project “Adrion Cultural Heritage Collections Network ‒ ADRINETBOOKˮ aims to present, promote, and protect cultural heritage in the Adriatic-Ionian region through the digitization of library and museum resources, conservation of cultural heritage, and the creation of special tourist guides in a new and sustainable way. Tourist guides in the form of digital itineraries are being developed based on the materials digitized in partner institutions and related metadata accessible also through Europeana. This project, in which the University Library “Svetozar Markovićˮ also participated, represents a bright example of a new approach to tourism offerings in the Adriatic-Ionian region, with the hope that it will inspire similar initiatives in the future.
