Summary/Abstract: Corellated to the peculiar forms of manifestation of the contemporary innovational tendencies in literature, the metafictional prose disputed its autonomy among the literary configurations framed within the ludic, experimental or hybrid literature. The terminology deployed by the literary theory for the expression of its forms of manifestations led to a hermeneutical controversy, and to a series of arguments and justifications in order to explain the chosen options. The contextualization of metafiction as a literary phenomenon was another aspect debated by the literary criticism, the opinions varying in a generous temporal interval, from the the literature of Cervantes to the contemporary prose. The benchmarks of the theories that attempted to shape a profile according to which a literary text could be considered metafictional prose relied on three central aspects: the textual reflection, the insertion of the critical discourse in fiction, and the role of the reader. Thus, in order to establish a reading grid for the metafictional prose, one should consider the nuances brought by each theory, regarding the message that the author of metafictional prose wants to convey, as well as the historical context of that literary piece,in order to keep the hermeneutics safe from the theoretical abstraction. The limitation of the framing to the postmodern period is debatable, since metafictional strategies can be identified in the novels by Laurence Sterne or Cervantes. Nevertheless, one can agree with the perspective that, compared to other literary periods, it is during postmodernism that metafiction has a considerable development. The Romanian and the contemporary Spanish literature identify in metafiction the main form of innovation, after communism, respectively francoism. If in the Romanian prose the writers mainly tend to construct an experimental literature, focusing on the jocular, and on the combination of various narrative forms, in the Spanish literature metafiction oscillates in the presence of the existential literature. Therefore, it interrogates the validity of the historical documents that can support the truth of some political events.
