Summary/Abstract: The urban culture in pre-communist Romania created a myth of the village–considered either Mioritic or earthly–as a foundation of national identity (Românism). Spiritual, political and social deformation during communism disfi gured indigenous rural realities in forms still obvious today. Unlike the pro-Occidentalist cultural direction, which superfi cially underestimated the local Orthodox Christian phenomenon, in Eastern Christian Europe there was a signifi cant infl uence over the folk creation by the high philosophical meanings mediated by Byzantine thinkers such as Maximus the Confessor, Dionysius the Areopagite, Gregory of Nyssa and Gregory Palamas by means of the Eucharistic liturgy.
