Summary/Abstract: The European Pillar of Social Rights presented by the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission at the Social Summit for Fair Workplaces and Growth held in 2017, established that all citizens in the European Union have the right to high-quality and inclusive education, training and lifelong learning. High-quality education and training, as well as the promotion of a European dimension to teaching fostering common values, are paramount for creating and maintaining a cohesive European society driving sustainable growth. The Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union stipulates that the Union shall contribute to the development of quality education by encouraging cooperation between Member States and, if necessary, by supporting and supplementing their action, while fully respecting the responsibility of the Member States for the content of teaching and the organization of education systems and their cultural and linguistic diversity. The main objectives of the paper are to present the measures undertaken by the European Union in an effort to ensure quality education, training and social cohesion, in accordance with Articles 165 and 166 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, as well as an analysis of the priorities in the field of education defined in the strategic documents of the Union. The results of this research will point out the European Union policies aimed at dealing with inequalities from early years and separating social, economic and cultural status, ethnic and racial background of the individual from educational attainment and achievement, with a special emphasis on the activities undertaken by the European Commission.
