Summary/Abstract: When speaking of the beginning of modern Romania (i.e. of the XIXth century), one of the first names that come to one’s mind is that of the Moldavian Metropolitan Veniamin (Benjamin) Costachi (1768-1846). Genius in vision and organization, this ecclesiastical figure stands for the one to whom we due the birth of the first Romanian Theological School aiming to prepare the Orthodox priests-to-be. Besides having reformed and developed the Moldavian educational system through a large range of measures, he also stands for the symbol of the prolific intellectual, having either translated, ordered or financed the printing of over 89 titles only of liturgical use, letting aside the other titles concerning domains such us spiritual and secular education. The paper aims to highlight these two aspects of his life – social and ecclesiastical reformation, not letting apart the importance of being the founder of Metropolitan Cathedral of Iași.
