LA TERNURA DEL DRAGÓN OR AWAKENING TO REALITY

Summary/Abstract: The present article examines “La ternura del dragon”, the first novel of the Spanish writer Ignacio Martínez de Pisón, with special focus on the teenager Miguel who is the main character. Using the perspective of an omniscient narrator, the story follows the process of growing up of a child who, due to his vivid imagination, mixes fiction with reality. The novel belongs to the first period of the writer’s novels where the narrative interest relies on a preferred territory of the author which is the family, the conflictual relation between its members, orphanhood. The great artistic ability of Pisón is to describe, in an apparently simple prose, the complicated transition from childhood to mature age and the consequent understanding that reality hides complicated secrets.
