Summary/Abstract: In 1794 the national raising against the interference into Polish affairs by neighbouring countries, mainly Russia, broke out in Poland. After freeing Warsaw on April 19, Rada Zastępcza Tymczasowa (RZT) was created. One of the most important tasks of new authorities was the organization of the army, its training and equipment, as well as the defense of the capital which, from the very beginning constituted the main centre of insurrection. In order to provide a proper performance of all these tasks, the commanding officer of the armed forces of Mazowieckie Duchy was appointed, nominating general Stanisław Mokronowski to this position. The scope of imposed duties, military threat of the capital, and material-approvising difficulties made the position of the commanding officer of the armed forces of Mazowieckie Duchy very difficult, responsible, requiring a strong character and resistance. General leutenant Stanisław Mokronowski was the commanding officer from April 18 to June 14 1794. Within this period he organized the foundations of insurrectionary army in the territory of Warsaw and Mazowieckie Duchy. Intensive works aimed at strengthening Warsaw took place when he fulfilled the function of the commanding officer. The repair and production of weapons progressed. The attempts aiming at gun production started. He played a significant role also in a military Warsaw prevention. Taking all this into account, one should confirm that Mokronowski as a commanding officer of armed forces of Warsaw and Mazowieckie Duchy, dealt with all tasks successfully and well served the insurrection in 1794.
