Summary/Abstract: The novel brings to the fore some of the most tragic events from the first half of the 20th century: the Holocaust, the Armenian genocide, the tragedy of the Crimean Tatars. Different characters experience different traumas, and unwittingly pass this bloody legacy on to their offspring. The main character, Maximilian Wagner, struggles with the trauma of losing the woman he loves, but also with the overwhelming feeling of guilt that he could not save her from death. However, Livaneli does not leave the wounds unhealed, but seeks to close all the traumatic circles, and to lead his characters to make peace with their personal and historical past.
