Summary/Abstract: Mihail Sebastian (1907-1945) has been one of the most controversial figures of the Romanian culture. He has been admired, but also highly contested during his life, as well as after his tragic death. His Journal published in 1996 has offered unquestionable evidence about the complicity of some of the most prestigious intellectuals with the extreme right. The complexity of Mihail Sebastian’s figure is also due to the fact that he has been Nae Ionescu’s disciple and collaborator for many years. Nae Ionescu (1890-1940), Professor of Philosophy at the University of Bucarest, an important journalist and an influential person of Romanian Politics, was known for his nonconformism, for the diversity of his actions and for the inconstancy of his movements. The sympathetic attitude towards the Jewish people manifested in Nae Ionescu’s writings and in his public activity turned into a philosophically and theologically argued anti-Semitism. As time passed by, Hebrew Mihail Sebastian’s position around the extremist ideologue Nae Ionescu became increasingly uncomfortable. This aroused discontent and reproaches among other Jew journalists. This research, which aims to highlight the strained relationships between Mihail Sebastian and the Jewish people, is a chapter in the forthcoming book of Laszlo Alexandru, which is dedicated to the interwar journalist Sebastian.
