Summary/Abstract: In the first half of the 19th century Metropolitan Veniamin Costachi, a bishop persistently involved in building the Church and Romanian culture, greatly encouraged those who wanted to work for the spiritual development of the Romanian nation, both from the church pulpit and from the pedagogical chair. Many people joined the efforts of Metropolitan Veniamin, but we believe that the best known and most diligent of all were the Scriban brothers: Neofit and Filaret. Well-known personalities, both in contemporaneity and for posterity, they made notable contributions to the development and modernization of education in Moldova in the 19th century.
