Summary/Abstract: The correspondence of St. Eugene de Mazenod with the Congregation for the Promotion of Faith is particularly interesting. He is a real apostolic man. He sent missionaries to all continents. At the same time, he is the only French bishop canonized since the founding of the Congregation for Saints and St. John Paul II chose him as his personal patron in the work of the new evangelization. First, the article presents the context of this correspondence outlining the vision of the spiritual life of the missionaries and the world of inner values and beliefs of St. Eugene. The article then analyzes the correspondence with the Congregation regarding the missions in Oregon and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). In both cases St. Eugene expresses a strong dissatisfaction with the local bishops and he defends the missionaries. Regarding Oregon, St. Eugene deplores the human immaturity of the local bishops, the Blanchet brothers and their ignorance of the fundamental principle of religious life, which is life and service in the community. The main problem of the letters regarding the mission in Ceylon is the indigenous clergy from Goa. They lack zeal and inhibit the zeal of the Missionary Oblates. The situation is worsened by the relations between the local bishops, who disregard each other and fight for influence.
