Summary/Abstract: Nietzsche philosophizes with the help of fictitious figures to illuminate problem contstellations from different positions. This makes it difficult to attribute clear statements to him, not least regarding his position on the Enlightenment. This essay tries to show, on the basis of Nietzsche’s figure of the “free spirit”, that this supposed representative of the Enlightenment does by no means appear consistently positive, but is critically illuminated from different perspectives, so that on closer examination he turns out to be a protagonist of a general self-deception, caught in illusions.
