Summary/Abstract: Armed conflict is the apex of interstate relations. When most people think of war, they actually think of tanks, airplanes and death. There are only a few who actually think about the factors that generate wars and the effects they have. When analysing the probabilities of actual violence, fear of actual violence blocks one’s judgment. Armed conflicts do not appear from thin air. They are generated by circumstances and, through them, objectives are being pursued. Wars develop the patterns already existing in the relations between states. And the relations between states are a result of direct or indirect state policies. Hence, the expression “war is the continuation of politics through other means”. By acknowledging and emphasizing the origin of modern conflicts, we might be able to analyse those elements that might allow us to avoid triggering new conflicts or to win those disputes which cannot be circumvented.
