Lexical ambiguity and translation skill

Summary/Abstract: The article proposes a translational reflection on the different strategies used by the translator in order to manage lexical ambiguity. They are part of what we have called translational ability. In the Orthodox theology and spirituality texts written in French that interest us in this work, the most frequent frequent type of lexical ambiguity is plurivocity by excess (Fuchs, 1994). Through the analysis of several examples, we will show that this translational ability is underpinned by three main components: the interpretative reading of the source text, the identification of the appropriate target language equivalent, and the discursive explanation. We will work on a corpus consisting of several personal translations (from French into Romanian) of the writings of the greatest contemporary French Orthodox theologian, the archimandrite Placide Deseille (1926-2018).
