Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this work is to present a relative comparison between the suites for cello solo composed by J. S. Bach, and the three suites composed for the same solo instrument, by Benjamin Britten. The analysis of Bach’s suites is performed in a generally analytic manner, without focus on numerous details, the central work being Suite No. 3 Op. 87 by Benjamin Britten. The three suites for solo cello appeared as an effect of a promise made by the composer, but even knowing this fact, his composing style doesn’t limit the surprises. Starting with musical genres and elements which are finding their roots in the Baroque Era, like the suites mentioned above, borrowing elements from the composers from 20th century which approached the same genre dedicated to the same solo instrument, Britten includes vocal genre form the Baroque, animated with Gregorian chant influences.
