Summary/Abstract: This essay is based on the author’s curiosity about rediscovering historical performances belonging to composer performers from the first half of the 20th century, such as Béla Bartók, and bringing to light their vision of freedom from constraints such as tempo markings, dynamic markings, and sometimes even musical values such as rests or short time values such as semiquavers, belonging to the musical text. The way of thinking and performing music in our times would suggest a rather conservative and standardized approach to the musical text for a performer. Alongside a detailed performance analysis of the first movement of Bartók’s Op. 14 Suite, I have written an introduction to this piece together with a detailed formal, harmonic, and rhythmic analysis to help the reader easily place it into a recognizable stylistic framework.
